Legion of Superheroes #40

The story grew in all directions just as I knew it would. I like where it's going. Unfortunately, the art continues to get more annoying and I think I'll drop buying the book after about three more issues if something isn't done. This issue has a lot of characters and they all look alike. I actually had to stop reading. I had to look a few pages ahead for a frame of reference and I had to look a few pages back just to figure who was talking. The art is flat out annoying and I'm sick of putting up with it. Art like this is a big reason I don't buy new comics.

| I am with you on your points! What I want to see answered is, "Which incarnation of the legion is this?". It sure reminds me of the PRE Crisis Legion which has been rebooted, what...4 times now? I have heard that question will be answered this summer. Just wish the continuity would be a little tighter here.

I have to differ. The art is the whole ONLY thing keeping me around.

| I'm with The Fuj. I think it's about time that Legion had a more stylized artist. The art is almost electric and I don't find it to distracting or anything of the sort. This book for me, has good writing and art. Surely not the greatest of either, but well balanced and a great buy.

| I've set a timeline. I'm off the book in 3 issues if the art doesn't shape up. I like Shooter's writing, but I really detest the manga stylings. Recent issues even look rushed to me because I've seen panels where he could draw better than he did this past issue. defiant1

| I generally go with what you say about books, but this Legion has been so BORING. and the art aint the reason. It's Shooter's boring plotting.

The Fuj (4/2/2008) I generally go with what you say about books, but this Legion has been so BORING.
and the art aint the reason. It's Shooter's boring plotting.
Shooter usually plots out a story at least 8 issues ahead and knows where he's going the entire time. I happen to like the intellectual dialog tossed into the story. If you can't wait for all the pieces to fall into place, you will never like any story he tells. Even his most critically revered work took time to evolve. The key is that it does evolve and he's best suited to write epics that intertwine multiple characters. He does an excellent job of making every character relevant in a team book.
I'd pretty much say that no art "excites" me as far as telling a story. It's pass or fail. There are varying degrees of pass. This art is fail. If every character has pointy Dragonball "Z" hair and the same facial expressions, I'm not really interested in seeing his work. If not for the colorist and a few costume differences, I wouldn't know one male character from the next. If Saturn Girl didn't have pony tails, she'd look like all the other female characters.
I still go back to my comment on the old board. You buy new comics regularly. This type of book may not appeal to you, but the industry didn't pull in a new reader when you added it to your list, you just shifted your budget for the month and found a way to squeeze this title in. When i bought the books, the industry got back someone that hasn't subscribed to new comics in 8 years. Plus I buy multiples of anything I buy. If this book is only trying to appeal to people that they are taking money from anyway, they didn't need to hire Shooter for this story. if they were trying to pull in readers that pretty much jumped ship, they had better start listening to people like me when we complain.
I don't care either way. I either spend money on a new product and get something I'm pleased with or I save the money and live my collecting days like i have for the past 8 years.
Come to think of it, this is one of about only two or three DC comic series that I've EVER bought regularly.
Eh! Maybe they do need to keep milking the shrinking number of customers they have. I don't think modern companies have what it takes to improve their quality anyway. Too much knowledge has moved on or passed away.

| I think that Shooter's writing style is more suite in trade format, cuz he plots 8 issues ahead. I'm too impatient for the payoff. Not to say that I want Millar/Bendis blow your wad every month plotting, cuz I bought Rise/Fall of Shi'ar Empire (UXM) and the fact I am invested in UXM's history as you are with the Legion. I jumped on board cuz of the cartoon plain and simple. I liked the cartoon. I always heard good stuff about Legion Lost. I always heard that Shooter was like 14 writing the books and made it great. I tried it, it didn't wow me. The art was fine IMO.
