KingOfRulers (4/27/2008)
Thanks for that article. I don't think war books like this are propoganda. They were not created the government with any intention of getting any reaction from the people. These were created by independent firms with the purpose of having content that would SELL. If selling books meant printing war books, then so be it. If there was propoganda then the war books would have been produced without end. As we can see, war books lasted from about 1940-1945, and then 1950-1956 or so. I agree that not all those war comic books were strictly propaganda, but their popularity certainly did owe much to current public sentiments regarding the USA's place in the world. Just because they were not influenced by the government doesn't mean part of the thought behind them was to reinforce the popular views at the time. I suppose I just proved your point that they aren't pointedly propaganda. Oh well.... But, I do want to point out that the dates you mentioned coincided with WWII for 1941-1945 and the Korean Conflict 1950-1954.

I have a copy of Fightin' Army #21 from 1957 that I will post pictures of if I get around to it, so it may or may not fall under GA, but I love the cover on it.

awillis (5/15/2008) Is anyone aware of any other nation having comic books published in that country about their army/navy?Not sure, maybe their armed forces suck so bad they dont want to publish any. I'd be interested in seeing France's military comic books.

I do this for my country, and I will continue to do so.” "They are blind to history's clear lesson, for history teaches with unmistakable emphasis that appeasement but begets new and bloodier war. It points to no single instance where this end has justified that means, where appeasement has led to more than a sham peace. Like blackmail, it lays the basis for new and successively greater demands until, as in blackmail, violence becomes the only other alternative." "Why," my soldiers asked of me, "surrender military advantages to an enemy in the field?" I could not answer. - Gen Douglas MacArthur
