A few years back on the old boards Mike Ballard announced he was collecting all Marvel's from the year 1960 and kept us all updated on his progress. I think he eventually finished?

I have decided to try something less ambitions and try for all DC's from 1982. Why 1982?

1982 was the year that I really discovered DC's in a big way having previously collected Marvel from 1978. I already have a good portion of them and they are still all inexpensive.

Rather than this just being a list of my new buys I am hoping this thread can become a flashback to the DC comics of 1982, discussing the artists, writers and storylines of the day, reminding us of those covers, sharing favourite characters and titles etc as well as discussing our 1982 collections.

If the thread takes off I will start a few for other years/companies as well.

To start us off here are is a checklist of all the DC newsstand comics cover dated 1982. Did I miss any? Also I need to check what promotional comics they put out in 1982 and will add these later.

This was a great year for the Legion of Super Heroes. I'm blanking on the artist right off the top of my head, but the art on the Legion during this time was some of my favorite in super hero comics ever. The writing, too, captured the spirit of the legion perfectly. An actual legion of teenage super-heroes galavanting across the stars. Great stuff.

The Legion was on fire in 1982 with the classic story 'The Great Darkness Saga' running from August to December as part of the wider Levitz / Giffin era.

Giffen! That's who it was. I can't say that I have ever enjoyed any of his work to the extent that I did on his run of LOSH. Great Darkness Saga! Awesome. That story is what Super Hero comics used to be. Huge epics confined to the actual title, with logical lead-ins and consequences again contained in the actual title.

One thing I like about this era is there was still a lot of variety in the DC line. From the above list we have...

22 Superhero titles

4 Sword and Sorcery titles

2 Anthologies

5 War Titles

1 Funny Animals title

6 Mystery/Horror Titles

1 Western Titles

1 Licensed Title

Earl, how'd you get the list? This sounds like a really fun thing to do, I was thinking I'd give it a shot (different year so I don't steal your buys, maybe '81 when I started really collecting). Wink

I commend you both.  I am trying to decide what to keep and what to sell so I can actually start to focus.

I used the master list on

http://www.dcindexes.com/

and sorted it by year

then made a summary of the 1982 stuff.

Earl.
