It has been over 30 years since I have been an active collector. My collection consists of about 2500 comics, mostly from mid-70s. About 30 years ago, all the comics went into ten 1.5 cubic foot shipping boxes. I am in the process of re-organizing them, and I'll be putting them into actual comic boxes from Bags Unlimited. (I was surprised to see them still around! I remember buying the comic bags from them decades ago.) Since each comic was in its own vinyl bag, they have stood up very well. (My paperback books were not so lucky. Years of pressure will cause the covers to stick to each other.)
I am re-inventorying them all as I repack. I kept track of the collection on special 3x5 comic index cards sold by Jack Boyd. Each card lets you individually classify up to 100 comics of a given title. Does anyone know if such index cards are still available? For some reason, I don't have cards on some of my titles, like Luke Cage and Son of Satan. I know I can keep track online now at the comicspriceguide, but it is kind of nice to have compact, off-line access to the info.
Sigh, I said that the collection stood up pretty well. One box was not so lucky. It contained B&W oversize as well as super-size issues (eg Superman vs Spiderman). I packed it badly, and now many of those issues are semi-bent. They are not hard-creased, but they have sort of like a wave shape. Currently those issues are buried under volumes of my Encyclopedia Britannica (also from the mid-70s!), hoping that several days of being forced flat by the weight will reduce this waviness. Hopefully this is the right way to attenuate the wear.
My mind must be getting old. I used to be able to look at a cover of a comic and remember whether I had read it or not. I now remember very, very few of the issues, and there are whole titles I would have sworn I never heard of (eg Omega the Unknown).
I doubt I'll get back into active collecting, but what I do have will be treated with respect from now on.

Welcome to the board! I was an active collector in the 70s, just like yourself, and dropped out/dabbled in a little/dropped out again/dabbled/quit and then started up again @ 3 years ago. If you read Omega The Unknown, something tells me we might have similar tastes...No doubt we could sit around and swap stories about Howard The Duck mania, or...
Who knows, maybe the bug will bite again. If not, you still have a heaping selection of comics from your favorite era to sample from when you have a mind to.
Something I've noticed about collecting then vs collecting now is that my collection today -- even after a relatively short time playing hobby-guy -- dwarfs anything I could have imagined myself owning back then, just in terms of bulk. I think my collection mk1 maxed out at 600-800 books... and these days I probably buy twice that much in 6 months' time.
New FS website coming soon!

This will give you an idea of how far along I am:

And here is an image of the index cords I mentioned:

I hope someone knows if Grant is still around, or if someone is offering something similar.

Howard I remember (and have, including his Giant Size Man-Thing origin). If Gearge Lucas would have just made the movie villain a vampire cow... !

They used to have things like that for AD&D.
You could make something like that with your favorite spreadsheet program.

I seriously doubt you will find anything like those index cards now. Since the advent of personal computers the move has been to cataloging collection with them since it is both faster and more feature rich. BTW there are several stand alone (as in you can run them on a computer anywhere and at any time) programs for cataloging collections. Some may require connecting briefly to an online database but after that you don't need that connection.

Lots of great memories still to unpack I'll bet. I can read my comics over and over...the longer you go in between, the better the stories get!

Don't get me wrong. I've got my DVD and Blue-Ray database on my Android phone, and I'm about 1/3 done cataloging my books, also with an Android app. I'm not anti-technology, but old, efficient ways can co-exist with the new.
I guess I'll just buy some normal index cards and use those for miscellaneous titles that didn't make it to individual Collector Cards (tm).
