Records are made to be broken. A CGC certified 9.0 copy of Action Comics #1 has sold for $2,161,000 at auction. This sale breaks the record set in 2009 when a CGC certified 8.5 copy of Action Comics #1 realized 1.500 million. Both copies were sold by ComicConnect.com. The auction began at the opening bid of a dollar with a reserve price of $900,000 on the copy. Neither the name of the buyer nor seller was disclosed.
Action Comics #1 is the most important comic book in the history of comics. The debut issue introduced Superman the prototype of all other comic heroes. The iconic character transcends comic books and has been featured on everything from products to television and movies.
The 9.0 copy sold is not only the highest certified copy, but also has an incredible history of its own. The copy was stolen in 2000 from the home of a West Coast comic book collector. The theft created an intense police investigation which last over a decade and crossed multiple states. The discovery of the missing copy in a storage unit in April of this year ended a search when some believed the book would be missing forever or worse destroyed.
