Press Release
Pedigree Comics has recently received on consignment some unbelievable, last-minute comics for their upcoming Grand Auction, turning the auction into an incredible, can't-miss event. With over 860 CGC graded books to choose from, most in the 9.8 and 9.6 range from the Silver and Bronze Ages (1960s and '70s) and a few amazing runs of popular titles, there is literally something in the auction for every high grade collector and investor out there for Marvels, DC's, Gold Keys, Dells, Harveys and even Charltons. The auction started the night of Sunday, August 29, 2010 and ends beginning this Wednesday, September 8, 2010. The first half of books will end beginning the evening of the 8th with the remaining half closing the evening of Thursday, September 9, 2010.
Many of the books in the Grand Auction come from two recently unearthed original owner collections consigned to Pedigree, the "Three Rivers Collection" out of Three Rivers, Michigan and the "Bogota Collection" from Bogota, New Jersey. The "Three Rivers Collection" consists of high grade runs of many 1960s and '70s DC titles, plus Strange Tales and Tales to Astonish from Marvel, as well as an incredible group of Dells and Gold Keys that ranks among the best ever offered for sale. The near-complete Flintstones run (Dell Giant #48 plus Flintstones #3-#60) from this collection is easily the nicest one in existence. The just consigned books from the "Bogota Collection" feature some high grade early issues of Amazing Spider-Man, including the world's first and only 9.8 copy of Amazing Spider-Man #40, plus a nice run of beautiful Fantastic Four between issues #39 and #56 that are all CGC certified 9.0 and higher, with a few choice 9.4 issues.
While there will be a bunch of early 1960s Marvel and DC keys to choose from, the undisputed highlight of the auction is the beautiful 9.4 copy of Tales of Suspense #39, the second highest CGC graded example of this important issue. Featuring the first appearance and origin of Iron Man, Tales of Suspense #39 has been a very sought after comic book for years with the release of the Iron Man motion picture starring Robert Downey, Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow. Since then, there have been two documented sales of 9.4 copies well over $1000,000, with a private sale of $118,000 in 2009 followed by a $114,990 sale by Pedigree Comics in their November, 2009 Grand Auction. Due to the increased demand of the issue, the current Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide 9.2 (NM-) value is 33% higher than it was in 2009, one of the single largest increases of any comic book in the entire Price Guide.
Another incredible Silver Age key that was just consigned to Pedigree and recently added to the auction listing is one of the best existing copies of Avengers #1, CGC certified 9.2 with off-white to white pages. One of only 5 copies graded at 9.2, this book is gorgeous and is the nicest copy we have ever offered for sale. In fact, there has been no documented sales of an Avengers #1 in 9.2 since March, 2005, five and a half years ago! With only 2 certified 9.6's and 6 in 9.4, this beauty stands as the 9th finest known copy.
If you like Amazing Spider-Man, then you owe it to yourself to check out the incredible group of NM/M Spideys from the Silver Age that were added to the auction in the few days before the auction commencement. These gems are from the mid to late 1960s and early 1970s, and include over 10 CGC certified 9.8’s that are the highest graded copies according to the census. Every one has at least off-white to white pages and half are bone white.
Pedigree also just received on consignment an incredible group of 5 Silver Age Flash issues, all but one in 9.4 and higher and all but one the best existing copy. This group was the final bunch of books added to the auction listing and augments what is easily the very best Silver Age run of Flash in the world and ever offered for sale. The new five Flash books include #114 in 9.0; #119 in 9.4; #136 in 9.4; #140 in 9.8 (Western Penn) and #149 in 9.8!! You do not want to miss out on these early 1960s gems as once they are gone they will be locked up in private collections for a very long time.
Other Silver Age Marvel keys in the auction include an Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 9.0 with off-white to white pages; a 9.8 NM/M copy of Amazing Spider-Man #40 with white pages; Fantastic Four #5 in 8.5; Captain America #100 in 9.8; Green Lantern #1 in 9.0; Iron Man #1 in 9.8 and Silver Surfer #1 in 9.6.
