Vampire mythology is nothing new in the world of genre entertainment, but when the HBO Original Series True Blood debuted in 2008, it brought a whole new take on classic archetype. Based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlene Harris, True Blood has built quite a large fan following. With the third season set to premiere on June 20, 2010, IDW Publishing is teaming up with HBO for a monthly ongoing series set in continuity with the television program.

"I'm really looking forward to exploring this new format," said series creator Alan Ball in a recent interview. "Comics have no limitations. Things we could never do on the show because of time and budgetary constraints we can do in the comic."

Although, the TV series and the comics series are set in the some world, the stories told in the comics will differ slightly from those seen on screen.

"The writers of the show and I are closely involved in the creative aspects of the comic — plotting, art, stories, characters — they definitely exist in the same world and follow the same laws and same mythology, but they're different," said Ball. "It's a completely different story than what you'll see on TV."

True Blood #1 hits store shelves this week.
