According to Pedigree Comics’ Doug Schmell, the top CGC certified copy of Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos will be added to the near complete Sgt. Fury #1-100 run his company is offering on its Web site, www.PedigreeComics.com. The listing began on Monday night, May 3rd, with the initial 10 books of the run (in reverse numerical order starting with Sgt. Fury Annual #6) and ends on Wednesday, May 12th with the early issues (issues #1, #2, #4, #5, #6 and #7).
The second Sgt. Fury #1 added to the run is one of only three to make it as high as 9.4. The issue is historically considered one of the toughest Silver Age Marvel keys to find in high grade. Cover dated May, 1963, it hit the newsstands the same month as Amazing Spider-Man #2. According to the updated CGC census, there are no existing copies in 9.8 or 9.6. Following the trio of 9.4’s, only 4 exist in 9.2 and 1 in 9.0. Very scarce in high grade indeed.
“This new addition to the Sgt. Fury run is a stunner. It is a tightly graded 9.4 with off-white pages, still in the old CGC label. It is perfectly centered with incredible cover gloss and very sharp corners and edges. The spine is remarkable and devoid of any stress lines or rolls, indicating the book was probably never read. It has a non-obtrusive date stamp on the front cover (“FEB 28”). Only two public sales of a Sgt. Fury #1 in CGC graded 9.4 have been made, both by Pedigree Comics. The Curator copy sold in August, 2004 and one of the non-pedigrees in August, 2007, both at record prices. We expect this #1 copy to shatter the previous sales marks”, said Schmell.
