Doug Schmell of Pedigree Comics, Inc. reports that his company just sold a CGC certified 9.4 Near-Mint copy of X-Men #1 for $100,000. The book was listed on Sunday, April 18th in the New Arrivals section of his web site and sold within a few hours. X-Men #1 features the origin and introduction of the X-Men plus the first appearance of both Professor X and Magneto. It is regarded as one of the holy grails of the Silver Age.

The copy in question, according to Mr. Schmell, is a 9.4 with off-white to white pages that was just recently consigned to Pedigree. It stands as the 4th finest known CGC example according to the census, trailing only 3 total copies, all pedigrees (2 copies in 9.8, the Pacific Coast and Curator copies, plus a lone 9.6, also from the Pacific Coast collection). The buyer is an eclectic collector who only buys #1 and first appearance issues, mainly from the Silver Age. The sale represents the second highest amount ever paid for an X-Men #1, trailing the $106,050 (with buyers premium) paid for the Mound City copy of X-Men #1 (similarly in 9.4) in November, 2009. Schmell further indicates that X-Men #1 has been a hot book in most high grades. A 9.2 example recently sold in his company’s last Grand Auction which was held in January for a record price of $55,000.
