Top Shelf Productions, publishers of such independant graphic novels as Blankets, Owly, and most recently The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, has just announced that they have entered into a capital investment deal with media entrepreneur John S. Johnson, and independent film producer Anthony Bregman. According to the press release, Johnson and Likely Story (Bregman's production company) have purchased a 33% interest in Top Shelf from Co-Publishers Chris Staros and Brett Warnock.
While Staros and Warnock will remain as the majority shareholders and maintain creative control over Top Shelf, the purchase will give Likely Story first-look options for all new Top Shelf publications or possible film and TV development. In addition, Johnson will also be joining the board of directors for Top Shelf Productions.
"Top Shelf and LikelyStory both put art before ommerce," said Staros in a recent press release, "but also celebrate those magical moments when art meets commerce, and a project that was built from the ground up becomes a success."
Staros went of to say: "Behind the scenes, Top Shelf has been presented with several investment proposals over the years, but most of them were ither proposals to buy out the company, purchase a ontrolling interest, or use the name of the company to do omething different than what we had built our reputation on. What we really wanted, and what we have now, are people who elieve in what we do and want to help it grow without hanging what we are doing."
