ComicsPriceGuide.com has learned that a CGC graded 9.8 copy of Avengers #2 just sold for a whopping $70,000 on the Pedigree Comics, Inc. Web site (www.PedigreeComics.com). The book, which features the second ever appearance of the Avengers plus the introduction of the Space Phantom, is cover dated November, 1963 and also features very early appearances of all five (5) members of the super-hero fighting team (affectionately known to its fans as "Earths Mightiest Heroes"). The book was listed in the New Arrivals section of the site on Thursday night, September 3rd, and sold within minutes.
 
According to Doug Schmell, owner of Pedigree Comics, the book was on consignment and the seller was ecstatic with the sales price. The buyer is a high garde Marvel collector who is trying to put together the best possible CGC certified runs of all the major Silver and Bronze Age titles. This is the highest graded and best existing copy, tied with the pedigreed Curator copy as the only 9.8's so far graded (out of almost 500 total copies already submitted to the CGC). The book has "bone white pages" and remarkable ink reflectivity and overall structure. It appears it had never been read or opened. 
 
Mr. Schmell has reported over the past year or so, Avengers is still the hottest Silver Age title on the CGC market. There have been numerous record sales set over the course of 2008 and 2009, including a bunch from Pedigree's last few Grand Auctions, culminating with the sale of a 9.6 copy of Avengers #4 for $64,000. With the anticipation of the Avengers motion picture growing, look for many more record sales on all Avengers issues in the months to come. In a related sale, a 9.4 copy of Avengers #2 sold the following morning for $9,250, similarly in the New Arrivals section.
