Comicspriceguide.com has learned from Doug Schmell, President and CEO of Pedigree Comics, Inc., that a new batch of ultra high grade, CGC certified Silver and Bronze Age Marvels and DC's has been consigned for their upcoming Grand Auction starting on August 14th. The highlight of the new books, according to Mr. Schmell, is a gorgeous, 9.8 copy of the ultra popular Bronze Age key, X-Men #94. "This is only the third 9.8 ever afforded a copy of this issue", claims Mr. Schmell, "out of more than 2,600 copies submitted to the CGC. It is easily the toughest of the 3 major 1970's Marvel keys to obtain in super high grade (CGC graded 9.6 and higher). Whereas Incredible Hulk #181 and Giant-Size X-Men #1 each have over 130 copies slabbed at 9.6, there are only 38 such copies of X-Men #94. And, in the coveted 9.8 grade, while there are 25 copies each of Incredible Hulk 181 and Giant-Size X-Men 1 (plus the IH 181 in 9.9), there are only 3 existing NM/M copies of X-Men #94, this being the third and most recent one. So recent, in fact, that it is not yet on the CGC's population report". Mr. Schmell attributes the book's scarcity in the 9.8 level due to the unforgiving black and dark green cover background that readily shows even the smallest of creases, bends, dings, stress lines and surface impressions plus the relatively small circulation of the issue (just over 119,000 copies) compared to the other two keys.
The copy consigned to the auction is from an original owner collection out of northern California, states Mr. Schmell. "It is flawless with incredibly bright colors, razor sharp corners and edges and off-white to white pages. The back cover is whiter than snow and is Mint", said Schmell. "We sold the first 9.8 copy of X-Men #94 back in March, 2006 for $25,000 and this copy is a little glossier and is structurally more pristine. It was obviously never read or opened as the staples are amazingly tight and the spine is perfect".
