Pedigree Comics, Inc. is reporting that a CGC Certified 9.4 copy of Marvel Comics' Avengers #4 has sold for a record-breaking $13,000, shattering the former record of $7,750 set back in February 2007. One of the most popular Avenger's stories, as well as one of the most reprinted covers, Avengers #4 is the first Silver Age appearance of Captain America and features a story by Stan Lee and art by Jack Kirby.
According to the press release, the buyer, an Avengers enthusiast, saw the book listed in a fellow Avengers collector's CGC Registry Set. He contacted Doug Schmell, President and CEO of Pedigree Comics, who owns the Registry's #1 set of Avengers #1-250, to see if he could facilitate a deal. After a few back and forth negotiations, a price of $13,000 was agreed upon, with both parties thrilled with the deal.
With the forthcoming films in the Avengers Family (Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers), it is no surprise that these books are selling at record prices. According to Schmell, the Avengers is easily the hottest and most in-demand title of any publisher right now, with these record prices being set on a regular basis.
