Variety has reported that the CW network is planning a television series based on Batman’s sidekick Robin based on his pre-superhero days. The series will follow the life and early adventures of Dick “DJ” Grayson.
The series is to follow in the footsteps of the Smallville series which focused on Clark Kent in his pre-Superman years. The Graysons includes Smallville executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders and exceutive producer McG from the Supernatural television series.
The Graysons will allow Souders and Peterson to put an original take on the classic comic book character who was originally introduced in Detective Comics #38 in 1940. Dick Grayson was a young acrobat who was orphaned when a gangster had his family killed. Batman took Dick Grayson on as his ward and trained him to help fight crime.
The comic book character Dick Grayson would later take on the mantle of Nightwing in the DC Comics series The New Teen Titans. The character Robin continued as a sidekick to Batman with several others taking over the role over the years including Jason Todd who was killed by the Joker.
