Metropolis Collectibles’ Vincent Zurzolo, Frank Cwiklik and Ben Smith returned from San Diego after having a good show, and have shared the following information with ComicsPriceGuide.com.

Metropolis reports that the hot “up-and-comer” movie-related vintage comics this summer were all titles related to Green Lantern and Avengers.  Hot on the announcement that Ryan Reynolds is locked to play Hal Jordan in the 2011 slated film, copies of the Silver Age Green Lantern’s first appearance in Showcase #22 were quick to disappear from the convention floor, with Metropolis quickly selling out on four low-grade copies brought to the show.  A lot of interest was also seen on Wonder Woman books, which included Metropolis’ sale of a Wonder Woman #1 CGC 6.0 for $7,000.  Many convention attendees also “oohed and aaahed” over Metropolis’ proudly displayed D Copy pedigree of SENSATION COMICS #1 CGC 8.0, still available, but unlikely to remain so for much longer.

As always, Amazing Spider-Man remained hot.  Sales included Amazing Fantasy #15 FN- for $7,500, and Amazing Spider-Man #10 (CGC 9.4 for $5,675), #27 (CGC 9.4 for $2,720), #51 (CGC 9.4 for $1,135) and #129 (CGC 9.4 for $1,400).

Other Marvel Comics sold at the show included Avengers #57 CGC 9.2 for $1,088, Fantastic Four #12 CGC 7.5 for $3,800, Fantastic Four #112 CGC 9.4 (Tremont Copy) for $1,300, Incredible Hulk #181 CGC 9.2 for $1,950 and Journey Into Mystery #83 VG- for $1,100.

Timely’s Captain America Comics #59 F/VF sold for $1,700.  Other Golden Age sales included All Top Comics #18 VF++ (Ohio Copy) for $1,000, Captain Marvel Adventures #3 F/VF for $1,339 and Daredevil Comics #11 FN+ for $1,300.

Cartoon and funny animal books garnered interest, and included the sales of Little Dot #1 CGC 9.0 for $10,500 and Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies #1 GD for $1,025/

Horror comics sold included two copies of Startling Terror Tales (1st Series) #11, with the VF/NM Mile High Copy sold for $7,400, and the CGC 9.2 River City copy for $6,882.

MetropolisComics.com would like to thank all the customers and collectors who came by their booth to visit them at the show.  As always, their professional staff is eager to help you with all your collecting needs, and may be reached by calling Toll-Free at 1-800-229-METRO (or international 001-212-260-4146) or via email at orders@metropoliscomics.com.

Convention News

Comicspriceguide.com has learned from Doug Schmell, President and CEO of Pedigree Comics, Inc., that a new batch of ultra high grade, CGC certified Silver and Bronze Age Marvels and DC's has been consigned for their upcoming Grand Auction starting on August 14th. The highlight of the new books, according to Mr. Schmell, is a gorgeous, 9.8 copy of the ultra popular Bronze Age key, X-Men #94. "This is only the third 9.8 ever afforded a copy of this issue", claims Mr. Schmell, "out of more than 2,600 copies submitted to the CGC. It is easily the toughest of the 3 major 1970's Marvel keys to obtain in super high grade (CGC graded 9.6 and higher). Whereas Incredible Hulk #181 and Giant-Size X-Men #1 each have over 130 copies slabbed at 9.6, there are only 38 such copies of X-Men #94. And, in the coveted 9.8 grade, while there are 25 copies each of Incredible Hulk 181 and Giant-Size X-Men 1 (plus the IH 181 in 9.9), there are only 3 existing NM/M copies of X-Men #94, this being the third and most recent one. So recent, in fact, that it is not yet on the CGC's population report". Mr. Schmell attributes the book's scarcity in the 9.8 level due to the unforgiving black and dark green cover background that readily shows even the smallest of creases, bends, dings, stress lines and surface impressions plus the relatively small circulation of the issue (just over 119,000 copies) compared to the other two keys.

The copy consigned to the auction is from an original owner collection out of northern California, states Mr. Schmell. "It is flawless with incredibly bright colors, razor sharp corners and edges and off-white to white pages. The back cover is whiter than snow and is Mint", said Schmell. "We sold the first 9.8 copy of X-Men #94 back in March, 2006 for $25,000 and this copy is a little glossier and is structurally more pristine. It was obviously never read or opened as the staples are amazingly tight and the spine is perfect".

The X-Men #94 9.8 is just one of many brand new consignments in the Grand Auction. Here are some of the other new additions that can be viewed right now in the Auction Preview (along with over 100 other CGC graded books):

Not too long ago, the only vintage comics that could bring prices above $50,000 were all from the “Golden Age” of the World War II era. In the meantime, however, the nicest copies of some comics from the Baby Boomer generation have cleared that hurdle quite easily. Case in point: a comic that barely made it to Heritage Auction Galleries in time to make its auction deadline, a certified Near Mint copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1, offered in the Comics and Comic Art auction taking place Aug. 14-15.

“The current bid for this comic as we speak is already at $53,000 – more than the highest price listed for the issue in the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide – and this comic still has quite a way to go,” said Jim Steele, who cataloged the lot for Heritage. “What’s really exceptional about this copy is the razor-sharp right edge, as most copies of this key comic – even really nice ones – tend to have chipped right edges.”

Another highlight of the sale is original Charles Schulz artwork  in the form of Sunday and weekly comic strips. “Collectors have seen the prices these have commanded in our previous auctions, and that has generated a lot of phone calls and e-mails,” said Barry Sandoval, Director of Comics Operations at Heritage. “As a result, this auction has some truly superb examples of Schulz’s work, with some of the most popular themes like baseball and football (with Lucy pulling the ball away before Charlie Brown can kick it of course). The earliest Sunday we’re offering, from Nov. 4, 1956, features the sensitive musician Schroeder.”

Virtuoso comic art is not just the province of Charles Schulz in the mid-August auction, as evidenced by the presence of the most significant grouping of original artwork from horror comic master Bernie Wrightson and a page of original Jim Steranko Strange Tales artwork from 1967.

“We’ve never had as deep a gathering of Wrightson’s work as we have in this upcoming auction, most of it never before offered for public sale,” said Sandoval, “and Steranko artwork from this period when he was taking Marvel by storm is – to say the least –hard to come by.”

A pair of important #1s are also generating advance-auction buzz among erudite collectors: a 9.2 NM CGC certified copy of All-Select Comics #1, with one of the greatest Golden Age covers ever by Alex Schomburg, one of the era’s premier artists, and the highest-graded copy of Archie Comics #1, the first-ever teen comic book.

Selections from the Bob Cowan Collection of Original Comic Strip Art also bear special mention as they ready for auction. The grouping, with 30 lots of original art from titles like Prince Valiant, Mandrake The Magician, Tarzan and Flash Gordon, among the many, promises spirited bidding for this splendid survey of original comic art from the second half of the 20th century.

“Mr. and Mrs. Cowan are a shining example of the collecting spirit,” said Sandoval. “They started more than 20 years ago with a passion for original animation art. Despite having a very strict budget at the time, they were very savvy about their purchases. Original comic art soon followed and, one piece at a time, they’ve built a great and valuable collection that we now have the privilege of offering just a part of.”

Since its inception, The Hero Initiative has had the good fortune to grant over $400,000 to the comic book veterans who have paved the way for those in the industry today. For more information, visit www.heroinitiative.org or call 626-676-6354.
