1968 Ralph Chicorel, needing to finance his family’s move from Michigan to Wisconsin, decided to sell the Golden Age comic collection that he had painstakingly assembled as a boy. He invited local dealers and collectors to view the collection and submit bids on the comics he had bought off the newsstands, from 1939-1947, when new comics cost 10 cents. The final bid was $3,500, which to the man on the street at the time would have seemed a staggering amount to pay for old comic books.

Fate, though, had different designs than for the story to end there. Ralph wasn’t able to find all of his comics when it was time to sell. The rest of them turned up later, and by that time, his short-term need for cash was past. His successful career negated the need to sell, and he watched over the course of decades as the price of old comics soared.

In 2009, the comics he forgot to sell are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the long-hidden second half of the collection will anchor Heritage Auction Galleries’ May 21-22 Signature Comics and Comic Art Auction, all sold without reserve. When comic collectors see which comics are offered and what sort of condition they’re in, they will surely have trouble maintaining their composure. Titles like Batman #1, Marvel Comics #1, Marvel Mystery Comics #9, Daring Mystery Comics #1 and Gene Autry Comics #1, all in remarkable condition, populate this amazing, single-owner trove.

“Somebody was watching over me, I think,” Chicorel said. “Go figure.”

“Just when everyone speculated that there were no more great ‘undiscovered’ comic collections, this astonishing collection came along,” said Ed Jaster, Vice President of Heritage. “Lots of people saved comic books, but you almost never see them in true very fine to near mint condition. Also, Ralph had an uncanny knack for buying the ‘key’ issues that would end up being valuable later.”

The collection was so good that when Heritage contacted Al Milgrom, one of the Detroit-area collectors who bid on the collection four decades ago, he immediately remembered Chicorel’s amazing collection all these years later.

“It's one of the great regrets of my life that I hadn't enough money to buy this stuff,” said Milgrom, who went on to become a well-known comic artist and editor for Marvel Comics and other publishers. “It was all the very best, very earliest Golden Age books in the best condition I've ever seen. “

“I had an aunt who knew the fellow who had the comics,” Milgrom continued. “I drove over to his house, and lo and behold there were all these well-preserved Golden Age comics… runs of all the great superhero stuff from issue #1 on. I really wanted to get them but I had no money. There were early issues of everything… Whiz #2… he just had everything. All-Flash #1, Flash #1. The condition was unbelievably good.”

Milgrom ended up finding a friend who was willing to be a fellow “investor,” but their pooled funds came up short of the $3,500 winning bid.

More than a few of these single comic issues will likely sell for well more than $3,500 by themselves in the May auction, Heritage’s comic experts say.

“I’m hesitant to put a total value on a collection like this,” said Jaster. “Let’s just say that a major collection like this should bring a substantial number. It will be exciting to watch whether you’re a buyer or an onlooker.”

The Daily News Online.com has reported that the original hand-drawn storyboards from Plane Crazy, the 1928 animated cartoon in which Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse made his first appearance will be on display in Buffalo, New York on April 4, 2009.

Drawn by Ub Iwerks who, along with Walt Disney, designed Mickey, these drawings are considered the rarest and most valuable Disney art in the world.

On April 4, 2009 The Buffalo International Film Festival in partnership with Shea's Performing Arts Center, 646 Main St., and The Walt Disney Company is presenting "Mickey Mouse Movie Masterpieces: A Celebration of Walt Disney." The all-day event will include 10 original, rare Mickey Mouse cartoons from the Disney Studio Archives and the complete uncut 1940 Fantasia, unseen since 1990 on the Shea's screen.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and the Shea's box office. The event benefits various children's charities in Western New York, the restoration fund for Shea's Buffalo, and The Buffalo Film Festival.

The storyboards will be hand-carried to Buffalo by Michael Carbonaro, noted comic historian. Originally part of the collection of Mort Walker's National Comic Art Museum in Boca Raton, Fla., the artwork will eventually find a home at Steve Geppi's Entertainment Museum in Baltimore, Md.

Iwerks, Walt and Roy Disney's original partner in their animation company, drew Plane Crazy all by himself, in secret, after the Disney’s lost the rights to their highly successful animated character Oswald the Rabbit in early 1928. Plane Crazy, however, was not released to the general public until after Steamboat Willie the first Mickey Mouse sound cartoon and the first cartoon designed specifically for sound. Steamboat Willie (also supervised and co-animated by Iwerks) was a smash hit, prompting the later release of Plane Crazy and Gallopin' Gaucho (the second Mickey cartoon) with synchronized sound tracks.

The drawings are warm and charming: Mickey Mouse - newly created - displays all of his iconic appeal in these first drawings.

Pat Powers, creator of Powers Cinephone, supplied his sound system to the Disney brothers in 1928 and made it possible for Mickey Mouse to talk. Mr. Powers' family was from Buffalo. Ralph Kent, another Buffalo native, became the "Keeper of the Mouse." Along with John Hench, he was the most respected Mickey Mouse artist at the studio and received a "Disney Legends" award.

Another Action Comics #1 has been consigned to ComicConnect and is being brought to market for the very first time.

Since the story of the Action Comics #1 broke last month, ComicConnect has received hundreds, if not thousands, of calls and emails from individuals around the globe who believe they have original copies of Action Comics #1.  99.9% of the time, they have reprints – confusing publications that look very similar to the real thing.  But one call stood out from the crowd.

“An older gentleman called from the Midwest regarding a comic book he and his brother, as young boys, purchased off the newsstand in 1938,” stated Vincent Zurzolo.  “Sadly, his brother has since passed away, but the two had kept the comic for over 70 years.  The man has decided to bring the comic book to market by consigning it to ComicConnect’s next Event Auction.”

The comic is indeed a complete, unrestored Action Comics #1, which has been graded 1.8 by CGC.  It will be offered in the first session of the upcoming ComicConnect Event Auction ending the weekend of May 1-3, 2009.

To see this comic when it was first debuted to the world Monday the 16th on the Fox Business Channel, click here to see the FOX interview with Vincent Zurzolo.

ComicConnect recently set the world record for the highest price ever paid for a comic sold at auction with the sale of the Action Comics #1 CGC 6.0 for $317,200.

Take advantage of the huge momentum ComicConnect has received over the last month and consign now.  Simply upload your comics on ComicConnect.com, and their staff will start promoting your listings and telling prospective buyers to bid on your items.
