Billy Tucci is all smiles at Wizard World Chicago.
Billy Tucci is all smiles at Wizard World Chicago.
On Sunday June 22nd, Sgt. Rock writer/artist Billy Tucci joined Easy Company “living historians” at the American Air Power Museum’s annual C-47 D-Day Flight Experience event.

Amongst the hundreds of spectators who attended the event, over sixty generously paid a tax-deductible donation to actually fly in a World War 2 era C47 aircraft.  The D-Day Flight experience also included gearing up in period uniform, helmet and “parachute,” while attending a very authentic mission briefing.  These guests were also instructed by Billy his fellow paratroopers as they stepped back in time and onto the aircraft to learn what it was like to fly over the English Channel and embark on the “Great Crusade” of June 6, 1944.

Each “trooper’s” M1942 jump jacket was emblazoned with nametag of a soldier from Lt. Dick Winters’ #67 “stick,” These were the men of 2nd Platoon/Easy Company /506 PIR who were made famous in the book and HBO series “Band of Brothers.”   A stick is the name for the 10 to 15 soldiers in each aircraft at the time

“Being a former paratrooper myself and knowing a thing or two about the soldiers of WW2, I gladly lent my services in an attempt to educate the public of the virtues and sacrifice of these wonderful boys who saved the world over 60 years ago.” Tucci stated.  “But I had one request, and that was to not come as a member of Easy Company, but of my own personal heroes, the infamous “Filthy Thirteen.”

Led by Private Jake McNiece, a Native American from Ponca City, Oklahoma, the “Filthy Thirteen” were the inspiration of the film “The Dirty Dozen.”  Who, according to author/historian Mark Bando, were demolitions saboteurs from HQ/506 and took solemn Indian vows not to wash or shave until the y had returned from battle.  Since the vow was taken around December 1943, the men were “pretty ripe” by D-Day, living apart from the rest of the 506th by “mutual agreement.”

“These were the men, spent most of their stateside and English training time drinking, brawling (with other soldiers and civilians) and well, in the stockade.” Tucci admirably admired, and continued that“ These true bad bastards were perhaps the worst barracks soldiers the army ever had, (they never saluted officers) but when it came to combat, they proved to be the some of the toughest and most feared sons a bitches in the world.”

Part of their notoriety is due in part by some famous photos taken of the “Filthy Thirteen” chuting up for D-Day. This small group of men gave themselves Indian scalplocks and applied “war paint” to their faces from their aircraft’s black and white invasion stripes before jumping into France. But their reputations as warriors were constantly solidified by their valorous actions, a nd several, including McNiece and Jack Agnew actually ended the war with four combat jumps (Normandy, Holland, Bastogne and Germany).  Both are still alive to this day and have written books and continue delighting audiences with their incredible stories.

So one can just imagine the surprise of his fellow troopers when Billy showed up 7am in the morning in full “Thirteen” kit and sporting war paint and a Mohawk!

The cartoonist stayed in character the whole day to the delight of all by scaring children, spending time alone (constantly sharpening his knife and rechecking his Thompson submachine gun in plain sight of the visitors) and even going so far as to threaten a 506th officer with “whipping his ass in front of everyone.”

In all seriousness though the 506th reenactors spent all morning and afternoon reflecting and relaying many personal, horrific and hilarious stories of those brave men of Normandy.  During the 45—minute flights over Long Island, the paratroopers shared very detailed and intimate conversations with the guests about the specific trooper they each represented.  They were told about the soldiers’ hometowns, their families and pets, and to reinforce the fact that these were more than just nametags but that most were real 18-20 year old boys.  Upon landing the guests were all directed back to the briefing room, where they received a “jump certificate” and learned the fates of “their” soldiers.  Some were so moved by the experience that they cried upon learning that their particular sky soldier didn’t make it.

Billy was equally moved by the experience and was grateful to Easy Company officers Jim Michaud, Mike Glick and all the others who helped him out with the impression.  “Jim loaned me much priceless equipment and weapons from his private collection and really showed me the ropes the whole day through.  He’s become a great friend and I’ve learned so much from him and the others about the weapons, uniforms and soldiers of the war that “Sgt. Rock – The Lost Battalion” would truly be “farby” without his guidance.” Avery special thanks must also be made to Museum staff, pilot Jim Vocell and Bill Caporale’s grounds crew volunteers aka “the Ramp Rats” who did such an admirable job all day long.

Billy also wanted to make it clear that he is indeed still married after getting the Mohawk and that if given the chance to do Batman or Wonder Woman next, promises to leave the bracelets and Underoos at home.  He also wanted readers to know however just how seriously he takes writing and drawing Sgt. Rock and that “by having a torch passed onto me by a legend like Mr. Kubert, I must go all the way.  After all, the readers deserve it, and those soldiers, like the brave men and women serving today, deserve our appreciation.”

Billy is a guest at this weekend’s Wizard World Chicago Con where he is signing all sorts of exclusive “Return to Wonderland” and the new “Ugly Ducking” lithographs and comics, at the Fantastic Realm Booth # 1216.  So come on down if you’d like to photo albums of his research, his artwork or if you’d just make fun of his new haircut.

ComicsPriceGuide.com has been informed that a record price has been paid for the highest graded and best existing set of the first three issues Justice League of America. The three CGC certified books were bought by Pedigree Comics CEO and owner Doug Schmell, for an undisclosed price, from Comic Book World, a local comic shop dealing in new and back issue comics, located in Florence, Kentucky. The deal was consummated on Friday, May 30, 2008.

The CGC grades received on the three issues of Justice League of America are simply astounding. The Justice League of America #1 graded 9.6 with off-white to white pages, making it the single highest certified copy to date. The Justice League of America #2 is also a 9.6 with off-white pages tying it with only one other 9.6, according to CGC's Census, as the top graded example. The Justice League of America #3, notoriously hard to locate in high-grade due to the all black cover, received a 9.4 with off-white pages, making it the highest slabbed copy and only non-qualified 9.4 in the world.

"The books are absolutely stunning, simply put", said Mr. Schmell. "I have not seen any early Justice League of America issues, let alone any early Silver Age DC's, that compare to these books. They are amazingly fresh and colorful with no noticeable flaws or handling defects. It is hard to believe that these books are almost 50 years old as they are practically in Newsstand Mint condition. As a Silver Age Marvel collector, I have seen a fair share of early 1960s Marvels that look like this but I have never seen early 1960s DC's that even come close".

The three Justice League of America issues will become available to prospective buyers and bidders starting on Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 as individual books, in the brand new Pedigree Comics Grand Auctions. Please contact Mr. Schmell if you have any questions or would like more information about the books. He can be reached at 561- 422-1120 or 561-596-9111. You can also email him at DougSchmell@pedigreecomics.com. All inquiries will be kept strictly confidential.

Once considered an after-thought title by some readers, Sub-Mariner is perhaps one of the hottest comic book titles currently according to Pedigree Comics, Inc.'s CEO Doug Schmell. He has reported unprecedented sales of the late Silver Age and early Bronze Age title. Pedigree Comics listed a near-full run of Sub-Mariner issues on their website that started on Friday, June 6, 2008. There were over 80 issues in total with doubles and triples of some issues from two separate consignments and the listing lasted till the following Monday, June 9, 2008. Every book with the exception of two were in CGC certified 9.4 or higher with many being the highest graded examples.

The results, according to Mr. Schmell, have been mind-boggling. Almost every comic sold within minutes of its respective listing, and only five books remain unsold as of this article. All of the 9.8 and 9.6 copies were snatched up immediately by waiting collectors and buyers, as did all the pedigree issues included in the run which were mostly Oakland’s, and Don Rosa copies, with a single Winnipeg and a single Pacific Coast pedigree copy. Almost every sale has been a record price according with unreal multiples of being paid. Mr. Schmell is still not sure what created such a Subby frenzy but he thinks the incredible quality of the books coupled with their relatively low values made collectors realize such a great opportunity to own ultra high-grade books from the late 1960s and early 1970s without spending a fortune. Compared to many of the other Marvel Comics titles that also launched in early 1968 he sees Sub-Mariner as being very undervalued and great books with excellent stories and covers.

Highlights of the issues sold included:

Sub-Mariner #7 CGC 9.6   $350

Sub-Mariner #8 CGC 9.6   $1,600

Steve Borock has selected ComicLink as the venue to sell a major portion of his original art collection.   Many of you know Steve as the President and Primary Grader at CGC. What many of you might not know is that Steve was one of the top collectors of high grade Golden and Silver Age comic books before being tapped as CGC’s # 1 guy. After he started working for CGC in 2000, Steve decided that while he still likes to read new comics, he would transition his collecting fever towards original comic book art.

As Steve puts it, "having been bitten by the collecting bug", he "needed to find another way to stay involved as a collector in the hobby he loves."  Steve chose to concentrate on getting an amazing cover or splash page of every artist he loved that could be framed and hung up in the CGC grading room. His policy was, if he did not love seeing it everyday, why have it. Over the last eight years, Steve has amassed quite a collection of covers and splash pages by our hobby’s top artists.  Now once again, Steve has slightly changed the way he is going about collecting OA (he has gotten the bug for collecting colorful pieces) and is letting go of many of his favorite black and white examples to be able to buy others in synch with the new scope of his collection.

While Steve always bought quality, and some pieces are quite expensive, he was not concerned about whether the art was worth a lot of money or not. This means, there is something in this offering that everybody can afford! There are pieces for as little as $100 and those that price in the thousands.  When asked why Steve chose ComicLink as the sales venue for his collection, he replied, "ComicLink has become one of the best places to sell original art these days, and is one of the most prominent players in our hobby. But that aside, I’m proud to say that Josh and I go back to my pre-CGC days and to the early days of ComicLink. We are the best of friends, and by now we trust each other implicitly. That’s always been a big plus for me in business……. "TRUST AND FRIENDSHIP!."

"Steve brought the same discerning eye to his comic art collection as he did to his comic book collection," said Josh Nathanson, President of ComicLink. "I’m excited that he chose ComicLink to assist him in selling the artwork, and that we can offer these quality pieces to our valued clients for their own cherished collections."

The comic art is being offered on a first-come first-served basis from the comic art section of ComicLink.com: http://www.comiclink.com/forsale_ca.asp
You may also benefit from ComicLink's expertise and extensive client base at any time by consigning to, or listing your comic books and comic art for sale, on the Comic Art Exchange and the Comic Book Exchange.  As always in the Exchange sections, updates take place throughout every day, registered sellers may add items to sell at any time, and top dollar is frequently obtained.  If you are not currently a ComicLink seller, and would like to become one, click here to apply.

And to participate in, or inquire about, the August Featured Focused Auction, which will include impressive Original Art alongside some of the best comic books in the world, simply email your prospective list of items for sale to buysell@comiclink.com for a prompt reply. You may also call Josh Nathanson, Douglas Gillock, or Tomis Erb at 718/246-0300 for a no obligation discussion about what ComicLink can do for you that no other company can.
