The first appearance of Spider-Man, an 8-page story which includes his origin, now belongs to the American people. According to curator Sara Duke, an anonymous donor has given the 24 pages of original interior artwork from Amazing Fantasy #15 to the Library of Congress' Prints and Photographs division.
The artwork, drawn by Steve Ditko and written by Stan Lee, first appeared in print in 1962, and is in good shape. The art has some whiteout where features of the women were modified, apparently not by Ditko, as well as pasteup word balloons. According to Sara, who called it a "lovely and generous gift," the donor checked with Ditko before donating it, and was told that since the story was a gift to him (although not from Ditko), he could do what he liked with it.
The donor declined to have it appraised when giving it to the Library so the actual value of the gift is unknown, although certainly in the six figures range. Three other non-superhero stories were in the book - "The Bell-Ringer", "Man in the Mummy Case", "There are Martians among us!" - and were also donated.

Adding to the excitement for some of its hottest upcoming titles, Marvel Comics has announced special variant editions with Secret Invasion-style covers featuring Skrully versions of some of the publisher’s brightest stars!
The new Skrully variants are similar to the ones seen on Captain Marvel #4, Young X-Men #1 and others. Retailers will be permitted to order one copy of each variant for every 10 copies of the regular edition ordered.
Details on the specific issues are as follows:
• Avengers: The Initiative #13 Skrully Variant : Christos Gage and Steve Uy continue one of Marvel’s hottest new series with this new issue that finds a contract out on Taskmaster and no shortage of assassins willing to fulfill it. But who will kill him first – the bad guys or his newest class of recruits?
• Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas #1 Skrully Variant : In this debut issue, writer Jon Favreau and artist Adi Granov begin a tale in which Tony Stark’s “me time” is cut short after he happens upon a beautiful archeologist, the dragon statue she’s uncovered and a swarm of lizards now running loose. Can he make sure that whatever happens next in Vegas stays in Vegas?
• Punisher War Journal #19 Skrully Variant : Jigsaw hatches the ultimate revenge saga when he kills off all of the loose ends from Frank Castle's life, replaces him on the streets and then takes out everyone and everything that he holds dear – framing him for it in the process. And this is just the beginning! Written by Matt Fraction and Rick Remender, with art by Howard Chaykin.
• X-Men: Legacy #211 Skrully Variant : Mike Carey and Scot Eaton present readers with Part 1 of “Sins of the Father.” Professor X is struggling to rebuild his memories using other people’s minds, but the past is coming back to haunt him in another way when a series of deaths are linked to Brian Xavier, the Professor's long-dead father. To solve this mystery, the Professor will have to visit the Hellfire Club.
• Wolverine: Origins #25 Skrully Variant : This milestone issue offers the final chapter of “The Deep End” by Daniel Way and Steve Dillon. Inside, Wolverine is in Deadpool’s clutches and just as he’s about to take him out once and for all, the other trap springs, leading to a twisted conclusion readers have to see to believe.
A couple who spent their life savings to purchase a comic book collection is now auctioning off the pristine 1950s Batman issues in our May 22-23 Dallas comic auction.
Jack Juka, a retired photojournalist and author, first saw parts of the Williamsport Collection, assembled starting in the early 1940s by an anonymous collector in Williamsport, PA, at a comic show in Scranton.
An avid comic collector, Juka convinced his wife Julie to allow him to use their retirement funds to make the purchase. "Lo and behold, I'm in the comics business. Who would have ever thought?" Mrs. Juka said.
Mr. Juka's purchase of the collection represented a chance to make up for a past mistake. "When I was a kid, my Dad lent me two hundred dollars to buy a high grade collection of Golden Age Comics from an antique store in New Jersey," Mr. Juka said. "That was in 1968. When I was in college, I foolishly squandered most of them away, and have lamented over it daily ever since."
Having two children in college has prompted Mr. Juka to part with a substantial portion of the Williamsport collection to subsidize their studies.
Lon Allen, Director of Sales for Heritage's Comics division, commented on the significance: "Oddly enough, many Batman issues from the 1950s are more difficult to find than their counterparts from the 1940s. That's because superhero comics, wildly popular during World War II and again during the 1960s, were out of fashion in the early 1950s as kids read horror comics and Westerns. Batman was actually one of the few series to even stay in publication throughout the 50s. Some of these Williamsport copies are not just the finest known copy of a given issue, they're the best by a wide margin."
